CoolTone™ vs. CoolSculpting®: What’s the Difference?

Non-invasive body contouring has surged in popularity as patients continue to seek effective ways to shape and define their physique without the need for surgery. Two of the most well-known treatments leading this aesthetic movement are CoolTone and CoolSculpting®. While they are often mentioned together, they serve very different purposes. At The Waldorf Center for Plastic Surgery, both options are offered to help patients understand what sets them apart. Whether someone is looking to tone and tighten or reduce stubborn fat pockets, understanding the core differences—such as how CoolTone in Portland differs from CoolSculpting®—can support a more empowered, informed choice.

CoolSculpting® was first to market, earning FDA clearance in 2010. It became the gold standard for non-surgical fat reduction by using controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate fat cells. The technology, known as cryolipolysis, targets specific areas like the abdomen, flanks, thighs, or under the chin. Over time, the body naturally eliminates the destroyed fat cells through its lymphatic system, leading to a slimmer and more contoured appearance. The results are gradual but long-lasting, making CoolSculpting® a preferred choice for patients who are close to their ideal weight but still struggling with localized fat.

CoolTone, by contrast, entered the aesthetic space more recently and was designed to complement fat reduction treatments like CoolSculpting®. Instead of targeting fat, CoolTone uses magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) technology to induce powerful muscle contractions—far beyond what voluntary contractions can achieve. This process tones and strengthens muscle fibers, creating a firmer, more defined appearance in areas like the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. In a single 30-minute session, the device can generate the equivalent of tens of thousands of sit-ups or squats, depending on the area treated.

One of the primary distinctions between the two lies in their biological targets. CoolSculpting® addresses subcutaneous fat, while CoolTone focuses entirely on muscle. Patients often think of CoolSculpting® as a "fat eliminator" and CoolTone as a "muscle builder." Neither procedure is a weight loss solution, but both are excellent body contouring tools when used strategically. Some patients even choose to combine the two: first removing unwanted fat with CoolSculpting®, then building muscle tone with CoolTone for a complete body transformation.

Another important factor is eligibility. CoolSculpting® is best for patients with pinchable fat and realistic expectations—someone who is already relatively fit but wants to reduce stubborn bulges that don't respond to diet and exercise. CoolTone, on the other hand, works well for individuals who want to enhance visible muscle tone and increase strength in targeted areas. Because it doesn't affect fat, it's most effective when fat levels are already low enough for muscle definition to be visible.

CoolSculpting® takes a few weeks to show full effects as the body metabolizes the frozen fat cells. CoolTone can offer visible results sooner, especially with a series of treatments, though optimal tone and strength gains usually develop after several weeks of consistent use.

For many patients, the choice between CoolTone and CoolSculpting® depends on their aesthetic goals. If someone is seeking a slimmer silhouette and wants to eliminate isolated fat pockets, CoolSculpting® may be the right path. If already lean and looking to take muscle definition to the next level, CoolTone offers a cutting-edge way to enhance fitness results.

CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting®: Can They Be Used Together?

Combining CoolTone and CoolSculpting® has become an increasingly popular strategy for patients who want comprehensive body contouring results. Using CoolSculpting® first to target areas with excess fat creates a cleaner, more contoured foundation for muscle toning. Following up with CoolTone can then define the muscles beneath, enhancing the overall appearance of treated areas. This approach works particularly well on the abdomen, where both muscle and fat significantly influence the shape and tone of the midsection.
