Why Does It Feel Like My BOTOX® Isn’t Lasting as Long as It Used To?

For most patients, three to four months is the expected lifespan for BOTOX®. Los Angeles’ Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team explains that despite most people seeing effects that last about this long, there are a few wrinkle-injection patients who notice that their results are now fading at a much faster rate than they normally would.

BOTOX® is derived from a type of bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It works by preventing nerve signals from reaching certain facial muscles, which renders the muscles unable to move as they would normally. This reduces the wrinkles associated with the muscles used for making certain facial expressions.

Although it is a long-lasting treatment, the effect gradually fades in the few months following the injections. In other words, wrinkles begin to reappear as the BOTOX® wears off and muscle contractions return.

It’s suggested that patients be mindful of which areas BOTOX® targets and when it begins to wear off in order to determine whether it will continue to be the ideal treatment for them.

See below for some of the most common reasons why patients might think their BOTOX® is not lasting as long as it used to.

You Might Have Developed an Immunity

Although unlikely, it’s possible for some people to become resistant to the effects of BOTOX®. In rare cases, some patients develop an immune response that causes a resistance to develop. It’s more common for this to occur in patients who get very frequent or high doses of the product.

Having a Faster Metabolism

A fast metabolism is often considered to be a great thing, but it may not always be the best if you are having wrinkle injections like neuromodulators or fillers. Although this concept hasn’t been scientifically proven, some believe that on some people—such as long-distance runners or individuals who have low body fat—BOTOX® simply won’t be as long lasting because they metabolize and break down the product more quickly.

Your Perception Has Changed

It’s possible that your BOTOX® is actually lasting for the same amount of time it always has, but you just think it isn’t. As your skin ages and continues to change, even if the treatment is working the exact same way, you might assume that it isn’t as effective as it once was because your skin may have lost elasticity or other changes may have occurred due to aging. If your wrinkles don’t seem to be staying away for long, there might have been an age-related loss of collagen, elastin, and fat volume from the face.

Improper Injection Techniques

The technique used to administer BOTOX® has a major effect on how successful the treatment is. If the treatment is wearing off too fast, it could simply be that you weren’t properly injected, or the wrong dosage was used. If you didn’t have enough of the product injected, it won’t be as long-lasting. This is also why patients who intentionally get smaller amounts of BOTOX® because they want more subtle results will usually notice that the results won’t be as long-lasting compared to someone who has a larger dose of the product. One way of knowing that improper techniques were used is if you are still noticing the unwanted muscle movements two weeks after your initial injections.

Talk to your injector if BOTOX® doesn’t seem to be working well for you. It may be a good idea to try seeing another injector. Choosing an experienced and board-certified dermatologist can be an excellent way to maximize your results—including their longevity.
