BOTOX® is the most commonly performed cosmetic treatment in the United States. Despite its popularity, many people still question its results. One of the biggest misconceptions about BOTOX® is that it causes women and men to appear expressionless after their injection sessions. Some people are scared off by horror stories of “frozen” results attributed to this famous injectable. While such effects are possible, the secret to ideal BOTOX® results is choosing an experienced injector who is knowledgeable with the product and facial anatomy. The Cirillo Institute team helps patients in the Philadelphia area plan for BOTOX® results that are natural looking and encourages everyone to follow a few simple guidelines to maximize their own injectable experience.

First, a brief explanation of the types of wrinkles treated with BOTOX®: Horizontal forehead lines, crinkles around the eyes, and furrows between the eyebrows that appear when you move your face are called dynamic wrinkles or ”wrinkles in motion.” Some people have particularly expressive faces, significant sun damage, or are genetically more inclined to develop these types of wrinkles.

There is no perfect age for BOTOX® treatment. While most patients become interested in BOTOX® when facial wrinkles begin to appear at rest, younger patients can “pre-juvenate” and prevent resting wrinkles from appearing.

BOTOX® is designed to reduce muscle movements in high-activity areas of the face by blocking communication between the nerves and facial muscles. This allows the skin to lie flat and stay smooth instead of bunching into lines.

BOTOX® is a relatively superficial, minimally invasive treatment, thus there isn’t much prep work needed on the part of the patient. Your injector may advise you to quit taking certain medications, vitamins, or supplements that can increase the likelihood of injection-related bruising and swelling. It is very important to discuss your complete medical history and medication list with your injector prior to treatment. The Cirillo Institute team will discuss pre- and post-procedure instructions with every patient in order to minimize complications and maximize the best results.

Second, finding an experienced, skilled, and licensed injector who understands facial anatomy is a must. Rapport is also an important element of the relationship between an injector and their patient, so you should feel confident and comfortable discussing your desired results with the injector you chose.

Third, patients should become familiar with the most common side effects including bruising and mild swelling. Knowing what to expect is helpful when it comes to minimizing stress after an injection session.

After treatment, you will be advised to remain vertical (e.g. standing or sitting) and to refrain from touching the treated areas for six hours to avoid spread of BOTOXâ to adjacent muscle groups. Do not exercise for 24 hours. It is recommended that you contract treated muscles repeatedly for several hours, as this leads to more active uptake of the toxin into the nerves, so they become inactivated more quickly. An ice pack may be gently applied after injections to decrease the formation of bruises. However, do not massage the treated areas.

Successful therapy is signaled by muscle weakening, which begins 24 to 48 hours after injection, peaking at approximately 14 days. Ninety percent or more of patients will respond to BOTOX® injections.
