Cellulite, or skin dimpling, is something that most women deal with in some form. Even though it isn’t painful and doesn’t pose any threat to their health, plenty of people are self-conscious about this cosmetic condition. Unfortunately, there are so many myths about cellulite that it’s often difficult to know what’s true or false. The Dermatology Office of Dr. Ellen Turner, providing cellulite treatments like Emtone in the Dallas area, aims to clear some of these rumours up.

Despite what some people might say, dieting and exercising cellulite away simply isn’t possible. Additionally, the rumor that unwanted skin dimpling only affects people who are overweight is untrue. People of all BMIs and body shapes can develop cellulite regardless of how often they work out.

Topical products that claim to be able to get rid of the dimples will usually have no impact because they don’t target the root cause of the issue, which occurs below the skin. Similarly, liposuction doesn’t typically successfully address cellulite—and can even make the peaks and depressions look more pronounced, especially if the patient already has poor skin elasticity.

Is there any way of actually making cellulite go away? There may not be a cure for this pesky condition, but there is hope in sight if you want to smooth the dimpled flesh once and for all, prevent it from getting worse, or at least make the orange peel-like texture less prominent. Here are five things that can noticeably improve the look of your skin:

1. Emtone

Emtone is an FDA-cleared, radiofrequency-based treatment that delivers a combination of thermal and mechanical energy to address several of the common factors believed to contribute to cellulite. This procedure is non-surgical, is virtually pain-free, and requires no downtime, making it one of the most convenient treatments for patients. Many people see instant results due to a release in dimple-causing tension and a thickening of the surface, and their skin will continually improve for months after this treatment. Typically, a series of six treatments are recommended but Dr. Ellen Turner and her staff will evaluate and discuss best options for each and every patient.

2. Exercise

As mentioned before, exercise doesn’t get rid of the puckered or dimpled flesh that’s characteristic of cellulite. However, regular exercise—especially running, cycling, and resistance training—can improve the appearance of your skin and make cellulite seem less noticeable. This is because when your muscle mass increases, the skin can look smoother. Moreover, decreased blood circulation is believed to be a contributor to cellulite because it causes reduced collagen production. Exercise is a way of improving blood flow to certain areas on your body.

3. Qwo™

Qwo™ is another cosmetic treatment that’s proven to minimize cellulite. The injectable solution contains enzymes that destroy collagen fibers. When injected into dimples, it breaks down the tightened bands of collagen that are causing the depressions on the surface. It also promotes new healthy collagen production for a more even look.

4. Protein

A high-protein diet can do wonders for your skin and even make cellulite seem less prominent. Protein encourages increased production of collagen and elastin while strengthening the existing skin fibers. It’s also great for building muscle mass. Lean proteins are best for your skin.

5. Fake Tan

Even though we might think tanning gives us a healthy-looking glow, sunbathing is actually a way of damaging our skin, even if we don’t burn. The UV rays damage skin cells and get into the underlying layers where they break down collagen fibers, increasing the chance of wrinkles and loose skin. Tanning is also generally bad for cellulite because it weakens structural fibers, making your skin saggier. There’s no doubt that having bronzed skin will make your cellulite look less obvious on the surface, but you can get the same effects by applying spray-on or rub-on self-tanners instead. Limiting your exposure to sunlight and applying broad-spectrum sunscreen will also help you maintain firmer skin in the long run.
