Thinking of having a tummy tuck? The Madison and Milwaukee area’s Parkins Plastic Surgery believes that learning as much as you can about this procedure beforehand can help you achieve the most satisfying results and have the best possible experience.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to help individuals achieve a flatter and more toned abdomen. While the results can be incredibly satisfying, it's essential to be well-informed before deciding to undergo this surgery. To help you make an informed decision, here are 10 essential things to know before you have a tummy tuck. Consider the following tips to help ensure a successful surgery and recovery.

1.    Swelling Is One of the Side Effects

You will experience some swelling for a time after your procedure, though the exact time frame will vary depending on the individual. Ever wondered why swelling occurs after plastic surgery? When your body is injured, swelling is a natural response—and the body views cosmetic surgery as an injury due to the incisions and other necessary components of the procedure. Swelling is one of the symptoms of an inflammatory response that happens when more fluids carrying white blood cells, growth factors, and enzymes go to the area during the recovery process. It’s difficult to predict how much swelling each patient will experience, but there are some simple ways to manage it. Your provider will tell you more.

2.    Recovery Time Will Be Necessary

Don’t expect to be able to resume your normal activities right away after a tummy tuck. It’s usually recommended that you take some time off from work following your procedure. Most patients take about one week away, depending on what they do for work. The surgery involves an incision, and your body will need weeks to heal. It will take some time before you can stand up straight and no longer feel any discomfort. However, techniques used for tummy tucks have evolved over the years, and recovery is not as extensive as it once was. Avoid heavy exercise or strenuous physical activities while you’re recovering.

3.    It’s Best to Be at a Stable Weight

A tummy tuck is not a replacement for weight loss, so you should ideally be at or close to your goal weight prior to surgery. It’s typically recommended to be between 10 to 15 pounds of your goal weight and maintain a stable weight for six to 12 months before this procedure.

4.    Clothing Won’t Fit for Some Time

Don’t expect tight clothes to fit right away after surgery. You’ll need to give your body time to adjust. Remember that swelling will be a side effect, so plan to enjoy new outfits once this side effect resolves.

5.    Resist the Urge to Weigh or Measure Yourself

Since you will be retaining excess fluid for some time due to the swelling, IV fluids, and water weight, your body will naturally weigh more for a while. It’s best to avoid stepping onto the scale right after your procedure. Remember, too, that a tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure, not a medical treatment for weight loss.

6.    Prepare and Have All the Necessary Supplies

Since you will be feeling tired and unable to drive or move much for the first couple of days of recovery, it’s best to stock up on all the supplies you will need before your tummy tuck. Don’t forget to fill important prescriptions in advance!

7.    There Will Be Some Discomfort

You will experience some discomfort after your surgery, and sudden movements—such as laughing, sneezing, or taking a deep breath—may hurt for some time. This will pass.

8.    It Will Take Time to Fully Heal

Although you may be able to resume most of your normal activities within a few weeks, it’s important to be patient, because some residual swelling can remain for six weeks or more. Moreover, it often takes months for the full results to show.

9.    This is Not a Weight Loss Surgery

As noted above, a tummy tuck shouldn’t be thought of as weight loss surgery. The procedure is designed to remove sagging, stretched skin while tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles and can remove small amounts of resistant fat. It’s a way of contouring the abdomen for a more toned, flatter appearance, but it’s not designed for those who want to achieve significant weight loss.

10. Scars Can Be Concealed

A tummy tuck will leave a visible scar, but this will fade over time. The incision will be placed in an area that can be easily concealed with clothing—even swimsuits and underwear.
